As an SAP Test Engineer I’m responsible together with my colleagues for the quality of our product and for compliance with the quality standards we’ve set. My day-to-day work comes with everything ranging from planning and testing to implementation, downstream documentation and consulting – I’m sure of one thing, it’s never boring!
At the moment we’re facing the joint challenge of introducing S/4 HANA at Haufe Group. There are also lots of opportunities in the program to use individual strengths away from the job description, and at the same time there’s always the chance to discover new strengths and deepen and develop them.
Our team is made up of a wide variety of characters, and together we form one big unit – it’s that that makes the work very interesting and fun, which certainly contributes to our success. The high level of flexibility is good, and it lets me combine my private life and work really well.
In software development at Lexware we work according to Scrum methodology, which means our day-to-day work is very well structured. Until a few years ago our developments were programmed almost only in C++. Gradually more and more C# developments were added, but the languages are pretty similar, and as a developer with a C++ background, getting started with C# is quite easy.
Something specific with us: lots of legacy code written several years ago. Every now and then I come across code that was written over 20 years ago, so this 'old' code is always a challenge, but it also makes the work quite fascinating. Working together with experienced colleagues who wrote code here 20 years ago is particularly valuable.
As a new guy in my team I was welcomed with open arms. The colleagues in the team have been working together for several years and the atmosphere is natural, casual and informal. Issues are addressed directly, people are honest with each other and the feedback is always appreciative and very useful. I’m also always given the feeling that my input is really appreciated, and that’s made it much easier for me to get started and contribute to processes and the development.
We look after various software products in our development team, and that makes the team fascinating and very diverse. Everyone has their own focus for the products whether they’re a tester or developer, and as part of our hybrid working model we’ve set ourselves a weekly team day where everyone is on site.
Every day brings a new challenge and every day starts with a daily meeting with the whole team where we keep each other up to date and talk about the latest topics. We also share our hurdles and problem issues so we can find common solutions. We work according to Scrum – so in the sprints we work on the topics that we planned and set as goals for the corresponding sprint in the planning meeting.
Initially I provided a lot of support and assistance to the existing team, and over time I then used the opportunities offered me to make suggestions for improvement and put forward proposals. I then took on responsibility for these, which was noticed and appreciated by my manager and the team. If a person wants to get involved with us, that’ll be permitted, rewarded and encouraged – it’s how new chances and possibilities within the team are created, and at Haufe Group as a whole.
